Wealth is not all about money. There are 8 different kinds of wealth. They are wealth of health, knowledge, networking, time, love and kindnesses, opportunity, boss and monetary assets.

1)                   Health

One day I visited Bob and he told me, “When I was in university doing my graduate study, I had two classmates whose IQ are not as high as mine and their results were way below my distinguished achievements. Often I have to tutor them out of my own free-will in order to ensure they passed the exams. However, today, both of them are multi-millionaires and I am not. They made it definitely not because they are smart. Their strength lies in their health where they can put in 16 to 18 hours of work, everyday. My father died at the age of mid-twenties. I inherited his genes and miraculously, I am living up to 51 years old todaydespite my poor health. I know that you have a healthy body and can put in much longer of working hours a day than these two guys. Why are you not capitalizing on your good health to become rich?”

I replied, “I love to work. I am very passionate about my work. Since 2004, I have been writing fervently and often put in 18 hours of work per day and for months in a row. Sometimes, when the inspirations came I woke up during mid-night or very early in the morning to write. I have been doing this for 7 years and yet, not a single day did I feel tired.”

Bob exclaimed, “Exactly, your health is your wealth!”

I asked, “May I know how your two friends describe their work pattern?”

Bob replied, “Their replies were, ‘Very good. I love it very much, every inch of it.’ When I asked them this question, ‘How about your family members?’ this was their replies, ‘I don’t know how old my daughter is and I do not know which school she goes to.’ I think they are mere workaholics.”

I said, “No, I would not want that kind of life style. My wife is 20 years younger than me and she needs my love and attention. Well, you know what I mean. Husband-and-wife has to spend a lot of time together.”

Bob interjected, “If this is the case, you preferred to give up being rich, do you?”

I pushed my body slightly ahead and took a good look into his face. He is very much into his dream of being super rich. I thought to myself, “It is about time for me to explain to him what wealth is.”

I said, “There are 8 dimensions to wealth and monetary wealth is right at the bottom. When you have obtained the other 7 wealth, money keeps pouring in endlessly like a fountain spring.

Health is the first wealth. Forget about what the founding leader of The People’s Republic of China, Maozedong said that health is one’s capital for revolution. Really, if one does not even have the health as capital, he cannot be said to be rich because money cannot buy back good health. Instead, every morning when he wakes up, he has to thank God, he lives another day.”

Bob nodded his head in agreement. He said, “I fully agreed with you. I had lost my health more than a decade ago. When the pretty, sexy girls walked past me, I could not feel there is a reaction in me. Unlike you, who can enjoy sexercise[1] for 7 hours in a day! ”

2)                   Knowledge

I continued to explain, “Knowledge is the second wealth. Knowledge is power. If a person has not gained great knowledge about a subject or a broad range of subjects, he can never be rich. The opposite is more true than gold. How many of the children of the rich ever matched their founding fathers’ fame? Worse, they lost their fathers’ fortune with a trickle of wealth left for their children. Why? They are simply not street-wise and equipped with little knowledge to handle their inherited businesses.”

Bob remarked, “I admired your reasoning ability. Your analysis runs deep and at the same time, you do not forget the big picture. In a mere paragraph or two, you had put the point across with superb clarity on many topics that you had written, for examples: politics, social, economic, finance management, stock market analysis, industrial engineering, quality management, modern management theory and practices, the dao of leadership, sociology, love and kindness, etc.”

I said immediately, “Thank you for your commendations. Actually, what I wrote could not be accepted by many readers.”

Bob asked, “What is the third wealth?”

3)                   Networking

I explained, “Networking is the third wealth. There is an ‘ing’ for the word networking. This is because it is a never ending process, don’t you agree? Networking is all about a lamp that attracts endless streams of moths to it. To win a war, you must have the ability to win over your foes to fight for you. This was exactly what Maozedong did. He brain-washed the captured soldiers with his political commissars and turned them into fierce fighters.”

Bob said, “In business, it is money that oils the networking gears.”

I shook my head and said, “No! Not necessary true. In fact, the richer a person is in term of monetary wealth, the worse he performs in networking. Why? His monetary wealth must be the results of his decades of hard work in applying the principle: “Your money is my money; my money is mine.” Often he had developed an appetite to assume “Your money, knowledge, network and time is mine and my wealth of everything strictly belongs to me. Do you want to get near to such a greedy person? In fact, anyone who had worked for him even though for a simple task quickly realized that he has been a sucker. ”

Bob nodded his head in full concurrence. He must have faced far too many rich men who had made him into a sucker, many times over. He said, “This is a simple example. Irrespective of how many over-time hours one’s subordinates put in everyday, the boss is totally indifferent and keeps demanding efficiency and every piece of task has to be completed yesterday and not for him to wait for the result to come in.”

I explained, “A person’s network can be build up immediately, provided he had found the right theme or mission. It should not be viewed in the same light as monetary wealth that must be accumulated. ”

Bob asked, “How do you build up your network quickly from scratch?”

4)                   Kindness

I explained, “This leads me to kindness as the fourth wealth. Before I elaborate why kindness is wealth, I would like to put forward to you two key concepts.

One, the Chinese philosopher Hanfeizi once said, ‘He who rules the world must understand how to give.” A true hero knows exactly the right time, place and who to give. If he wants to build up a strong network of die-heart friends and supporters, he must know what to give. In my personal opinion, I would like to improve on his quote, ‘He who rules the world must understand how to give something that touches the heart.’

Well, he who knows how to tug the string that can change a person allegiance he shall build a vast network from friends and foes alike speedily. What kind of string to tug? Which string really touches one’s heart and mind you, everyone’s feel is different and moreover, it changes with time. I named this piece of string, Kindness. I am about to complete writing a book entitled, “Kindness”. I want to teach the world about kindness.”

Bob interjected, “Kindness? I fear in the world of hotly contested or ruthless business world, there is absolutely no kindness. You could be right. The one-eyed Jack is the king among the blinds.”

I continued, “Second, one must learn to liberate oneself from the selfish thought of being too engrossed with ‘I, me and myself’. This is easier said than done. Well, as if I hold the magic wand, I have the answer for you. Following may be a little long-winded explanation. However, it tells it all.

LoveWho doesn’t love his wife, her husband, children, parents, fiancée, fiancé, relatives, friends and even strangers?

However, before you love others, you must first love yourself.

How to love oneself?

In 7,000 years of human history, how many of us understand that the very first step to love ourselves is to liberate our thoughts from the mindset of “I, me and myself”. This mindset is akin to the hard shell of a seed that encloses our love and kindness deep within its core. If we do not break up this shell, our love and kindness will forever be buried deep inside our heart, irrespective of how much love or kindness we were bestowed with, they will never be able to germinate out of this shell.

There are endless squabbles within one’s family.

In every society, the act of kindness is rarer than diamonds.

Which country is not run by false leaders who caused the majority of their citizens to live in endless pains, sufferings and hopelessly in despair?

Yet, the root cause of all human sufferings originates from the very fact that no one had ever learned to love oneself by liberating from the mindset of ‘I, me and myself’

Bob, do you get it?”

Bob though for a while. He replied, “I know what you are trying to drive at. You mean being selfless. Don’t you?”

I explained, “The trick to selflessness is, first empty one’s heart from the three poisons of all broken-relationship, they are: I, me and myself. Don’t you agree?”

Bob replied, “This is the hardest part of all.”

I continued, “If either one of these three words were to remain in one’s heart, forever, it is going to repel the addition or the presence of another person to sit comfortably in one’s heart.”

Bob replied, “Hats off to you. Nobody ever explained to me with this clarity about the exacting reason that separates the selfish and the selfless and with one stroke, you too, managed to teach a selfish person how to learn to become selfless. What a wonderful philosopher you are. I must read your book, ‘Kindness’.”

I concluded, “A selfish person can never be kind. It takes only a short moment of time when he had liberated his heart from the three words, ‘I, me and myself’ would then he is able to proffer kindness. On a scaled basis, the more selfish a person is, the harder it is for him to find time to proffer kindness. The kinder a person is, the easier he is able to liberate himself or more exacting, empty his heart from these three words.”

Bob shook his head in disbelief.  He said, “I could not imagine you can describe the act of kindness so beautifully.”

I continued, “Let me elaborate what is called, passion for kindness.”

Bob was a little impatient, he said, “Bill Gates give almost all his wealth, some US$40 billions to charity and set up Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation. This foundation had given out hundreds of millions in grants and sponsorships. Let’s not talk the talk on this subject anymore.”

I shook my head, “Bob, there is something that you do not know enough about passion for kindness. I shall take on your example.

Since December 2004, the Acheh tsunami occurred on Dec 26 2004, a grade 5 hurricane Katrina slashed upon New Orleans in Aug 2005, the Sichuan earthquake occurred on May 12, 2008, the Haiti earthquake hit on January 12, 2010, the Qinghai earthquake shook Yushu on April 14, 2010, Mar 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami at Fukushima emitted 16,700 PetaBecquerel (1 Becquerel is one radioactive decay per second of radioactive) of Xenon-133 into the air and the recent October Turkey earthquake and Thailand capital is inundated by a huge flood caused monumental destructions to the millions of victims of these 8 natural disasters. The Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation merely poured in their support to its chosen Catholic Relief Services, Mercy Corps and the World Food Program partners whose records shown efforts to help 3 out of the 8 disasters.

When a natural disaster strikes, it knows no boundary, country, race, religion or tribe. What is needed is a passion for kindness to alleviate the sufferings of these fellow human beings. Apart from the early delivery of water, food and tents, these people are left homeless until today.

Melinda and Bill Gates read all these news and videos.  However, they had not emptied their hearts from “I have drafted out 26 different strategies to return to the society. If it does not fall into any one of these 26 strategies, I am afraid our foundation will not offer assistance.” Please read the word ‘I’. In times of great disasters, the ‘I’ had become an obstacle to proffer kindness.”

Bob disagreed vehemently, he said. “No matter what you say, the world over recognized that Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation is the biggest and most honorable charity organization. Even Warrant Buffet gave up all his wealth to this foundation. Let’s not argue further.”

I toned down my voice and said, “When I wrote about kindness, I must champion my vision to explain to the world, the little slack in passion about kindness if it exists and I do not mean to say anything bad about the Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation. A job is a job. I must do an honest day job.”

Bob sensed that I had become a little defensive, he said, “Of course, I understand you. You are too sincere in everything you do.”

5)                   Time

I heaved a sigh and continued, “Fifth, time is wealth. No matter what you do, you need time. All tasks must be completed by people who have the time on hand to do it.”

Bob replied, “Okay. I agreed with you, time is wealth. An organization that hired tens of thousands of employees has an abundance of its employees’ time made available to the organization to be put to effective and efficient use to achieve the organization’s goals, therefore, the larger the organization, the more successful it is. You must agree with me on this point.”

I declined, “No! It is not as simple as arithmetic, more time means more output. Dow Jones Industrial Average was first created in 1896 May 26. DJIA is a weighted average of the share value of the top 12 stocks. From among these first 12 stocks, only General Electric remains till today. Today, DJIA consists of 30 component stocks out of which 5 were added before the Second World War, 7 were added in 2000 and later, while the remaining 17 stock were added in the later-half of the 20th century after 1945.

Let’s pick Hewlett-Packard for a closer discussion. Since Carly Fiorina took over as chairman and CEO of HP in July 1999 to August 28, 2011, HP stock price after stock split adjustment, inched up slightly from S23.32 to $24.54, a mere 5% growth. 150,000 best of the best HP employees had 1.2 millions on hand everyday and yet over a period of twelve years, it did not progress and all these time were wasted.”

Bob replied, “I did not do this kind of statistical analysis. You got a point.”

6)                   Opportunity

I continued, “A great leader leads not by management theory, management system or management tactics or strategies, it is all about leadership. How many of us truly understand leadership is all about touching the hearts?

Today, we have Occupy Wall Street that begun on September 17, 2011. What did the mayor of New York did recent? He forcibly removed 6 generators that power the cluster of computers that these protesters used to coordinate the country-wide Occupy Together movement and of course, generate heat to warm the tents for winter had come in a little bit early this year.

We know Michael Bloomberg the mayor of New York made his fortune from everyone in Wall Street who subscribes to Bloomberg News. He knows who his valued customers are. This explained why he removed those generators. He valued the 1% more than the lives of the 99%.

If Michael Bloomberg has a vision to the President of USA, he better shifts his mindset and crosses the line. The Occupy Wall Street movement is providing a golden opportunity right at his door-step to enable him to catapult himself to the highest office in the USA. He has all the time of all the protesters of Occupy Together who could help to spread his name and fame all over the USA. What it takes is merely a few good words of encouragement for these protesters.”

Bob said, “Beautifully said. I want to see whether Michael Bloomberg is an idiot or not. It is too good to let an Alice in Wonderland kind of opportunity to miss.”

7)                   Boss

I took a pause and softly, I said, “Boss is the seventh wealth.”

Zhaozilong , the only warrior in Chinese history who had never lost a single battle. He was fortunate to find Liu Bei as his master. Liu Bei was one of the three rulers who divided up China into three warring states soon after the fall of the Han dynasty.

There is another Chinese saying: Even if you are as talented as Zhugeliang, the greatest military adviser who assisted Liu Bei, in peace time, your talent is a complete waste.”

To Michael Bloomberg, the current mayor of New York City, who do you think his boss is? There are 5 options to choose from.

1)       Nay! No boss. He founded Bloomberg services.

2)       His customers collectively are his boss. That is why he sided with the 1%.

3)       The residents of the city of New York, if you think he has a heart for the ordinary folks.

4)       The Occupy Wall Street protesters if he feels they have a valid reason to occupy Zuccotti Park.

5)       The protesters across the entire USA if he thinks he wants to take a bet to run the next up and coming Presidential election whether as an independent candidate or ride on the Republicans or Democrats platform either as the President or Vice President.

8)                   Money

I do not want to elaborate on this eighth wealth because you have as much knowledge on this subject as I do. However, I have one point to add. This is a Chinese saying, “My monetary wealth if I do not spend it now, it will be squandered by my next generations.”

This comes to my conclusion. Gather all the 7 wealth before money. Even when you have made a lot of money, spend it to build up more of the first 7 wealth.

Wealth generates even greater wealth and not money generates more money.

Money is the mother of all robberies.

1.       It robs you of your health (16% of the American GDP goes to spending on health-care.)

2.       It robs you of your knowledge (China is even more capitalist than USA. Less than 1% of its population owns more money than 90% of its entire population. It is already in acute intensive care now. Yet, the EU leaders are still playing with the China card.)

3.       It robs you of all network (The Iraq war had severed all ties with the 195 countries in the world. Poor Obama had the ‘best’ of all times to start rebuilding American network from scratch.)

4.       It robs you of your time (When did the last time you have dinner together with your spouse?)

5.       It robs you of your love and kindness (Ask yourself: When did the last time I carry out an act of kindness?)

6.       It robs your of your opportunity (Ben Bernanke and every member of the 12 Federal Reserve districts are giving this a miss.)

7.       It robs your of your boss (The more exacting word should be leadership. In time of crisis like now, there is absolutely no leadership in USA, from the Oval office right down to your immediate boss. )

8.       It robs your of your money (You never know when the US dollar will be on par with the Indonesian rupiah.)

As I am typing, my tears drop onto the keypad of my laptop. Who cares my laptop will conk out soon? But I care for the once great America nation that was robbed of all its 8 wealth.

[1] I coined this new word. It is a form of exercise that evolved around the act of making love. Imagine the health of body and mind of a marathon runner who completes 42 kilometers in 4 hours. What do you think the health of a person, body and soul when he completes a bout of sexercise lasting 7 hours or more? It is not about youth. It is more than youth. It is about a truly great healthy body, mind and soul.
